I recently saw the hugely anticipated and critically acclaimed There Will Be Blood, the most recent endeavor of director Paul Thomas Anderson, whose previous work includes Boogie Nights, Punch-Drunk Love, and one of my favorite movies, Magnolia. In no way am I a proper movie critic, but I thought I would share a couple of my thoughts:
1. Daniel Day Lewis is AMAZING. It’s no wonder as to why he got the Oscar for his performance as the tormented oil tycoon, Daniel Plainview.
2. Paul Dano is also great in his performance as the creepy church leader, Eli Sunday.
3. Although this is an incredible piece of filmmaking, I wasn’t as blown away as I thought I would be. There were some major holes within the storyline and the character development that left me scratching my head.
4. All in all, this is a beautiful film and I would recommend seeing it at least once. It is highly deserving of all the acclaim it has received. However, if you want to see Anderson’s filmmaking (and filmmaking in general, in my humble opinion) at its finest, do yourself a favor and rent Magnolia.
